Forty Years

Forty years ago today I was a nervous 19 year old, with hands that shook as they held a bouquet of yellow roses.

I have been celebrating, during the weeks leading up to this day, by remembering (and writing of course,) about some parts of our journey.

Our celebration of this milestone anniversary, has been unique to "us." We are very different in personality and what falls within each of our comfort zones. So as the day approached, we talked through how we were going to celebrate.

For me it was important to acknowledge the blessing of being together at all, and then for so long. I didn't need any fanfare or big party to do that; I only really needed one person. Every other acknowledgement would just be a blessing.

We discussed going away for the weekend together, but then we thought we would plan just a day away together. We talked some more and realized that what we both just really wanted to do was just be here, at home, together. So that's what we.ve been doing this weekend: "Being;" "at home;" "together," having celebrations with family and ejoying it very much.


Our 40 years together have held days of pain and shadow; as well as light and laughter. That we are here today is by God's grace and in spite of ourselves. I celebrate that.

Wow, staying together for forty years nowadays takes some incredible tenacity... Congratulation to both of you. What blessing has come out of hanging on tight and finishing the race together. Thank you, God, for your grace and mercy in bringing these two dear people together, and keeping them that way. We all celebrate with you!

(Because if you hadn't made it, where would I eat on Thursday nights? :) )

Congratulations to you both!

I love the imagery in The Message version of Mark 10:5-9 "In the original creation, God made male and female to be together. Because of this, a man leaves father and mother, and in marriage he becomes one flesh with a woman—no longer two individuals, but forming a new unity. Because God created this organic union of the two sexes, no one should desecrate his art by cutting them apart."

This "organic union" is hard work at times, but the rewards are worth it.

Ere Zij God--Glory to God in the Highest! A Dutch Carol

By Belinda This beautiful Dutch carol was shared today by a friend of Dutch ancestry, on Facebook. I had never heard it before but absolutely loved it. It moved me deeply, especially at the end after the crowd leaves the church and then breaks into spontaneous singing again around a brazier, with the sound of chiming church bells in the background. Listen to it with headphones or a good speaker to get the full effect of the harmonies. And happy first Sunday in Advent!

Samson Beaver and his Family

I first posted this in 2009, a little show and tell about one of my favourite photographs. Back then it hung on a wall, but now it's in my bathroom where I see it every morning! I'd forgotten the history behind the story, researched when I first posted this and thought that current readers might enjoy it--a story from a time when this land was still being discovered, not so very long ago. This photograph was taken by Mary Schaffer; artist, photographer, writer and naturalist, in 1907. It is of a Stoney Indian named Samson Beaver, with his wife Leah and daughter, Frances Louise. I bought the photo on a postcard, on a trip to British Columbia and it hangs framed, on the wall I face when sitting at my laptop. I love it. Don't you just feel as if you could gather Frances Louise up in your arms and cuddle her?
